In the spring of 2005, Soror Leah Taylor called four sorors to a meeting at her home. She proposed the idea of chartering a graduate chapter in the California, PA area. At the time the only active graduate chapter in Western, PA was the Lambda Lambda Zeta Chapter in Pittsburgh, PA. Each of these sorors was a part of the graduate chapter but distance was becoming a problem. With Pittsburgh being more than forty miles away, the sorors felt a need for service in the southern most part of the state. With this concept in mind in February 2005; the five young ladies petitioned the 7th Pennsylvania State Director Janet Y. Bivins, Esq. for a chapter charter in California, PA. Three weeks later on March 11, 2005 the Upsilon Eta Zeta chapter of Southwestern, PA was founded. The charter members were Andrea’ Cousin, Desiree’ Jackson, Raven Johnson, Leah Taylor and Seneca Weatherspoon. These five young ladies began to do service immediately. Within the chapter’s first year of existence, they won an award for completing z-hope programs in the state of Pennsylvania. October 14, 2005 at the Atlantic Regional Conference in Cherry Hill, NJ, the Upsilon Eta Zeta Chapter was chartered by the 13th Atlantic Regional Director Soror Jacqueline Lemon-Denton and the 22nd International Grand Basileus Soror Barbara C. Moore.
This was a very exciting day for the sorors of the newly chartered graduate chapter. Immediately after the chartering of Upsilon Eta Zeta Chapter, Soror Bivins gave the chapter the sponsorship of the undergraduate chapter, Zeta Epsilon, at California University of PA. In the summer of 2007, 8th Pennsylvania State Director, Soror Arlinda J. Willis, Esq. gave Upsilon Eta Zeta Chapter the sponsorship of the undergraduate chapter, Mu Kappa, at Indiana University of PA. The sorors of the Upsilon Eta Zeta Chapter believe that a soror has a distinct personality and qualities that allow a varied approach and contribution to the work of Zeta. All members of the undergraduate chapters are actively seeking degrees and are well known on their campuses. The graduate chapter is full of professional and successful women who average one or more degrees. To date the Upsilon Eta Zeta Chapter has been committed to excellence and the continuation of a distinguished legacy in California, PA and in the community beyond.
